A plasterer’s hawk is simply the name given to the tool that workmen use to hold plaster, mortar, or other material on and then hold it in one hand so that it gives quick and easy access to that material. Hawk boards are square boards that are usually around 25cm large and have a centrally fixed handle underneath that is perpendicular to the board. Hawk boards are used by plasterers and also brick pointers, who use them when they are renewing the outer masonry on brickwork. The name ‘hawk’ probably comes from the way the board sits on the user’s arm, like a hawk would.
