Best electric hedge trimmers
Garden hedges are a very common site here in the UK and with good reason. They can look fantastic if they are kept properly pruned and trimmed. On the other hand an overgrown, unkempt hedge can look pretty dire.
There are a few different tools out there you can use to keep your hedges looking good, from traditional hand shears, pruners, and loppers, to motorised power trimmers.
Electric Hedge Trimmers
Power trimmers can also be broken down into sub-categories- electric hedge trimmers, cordless hedge trimmers, and petrol hedge trimmers.
This page is dedicated to electric hedge trimmers only as we already have separate pages that focus on cordless hedge trimmers and petrol hedge trimmers.
Corded electric hedge trimmers themselves have variations. This could be the power of the motor, some special features making them unique, or the ability to be extended.
These electric pole hedge trimmers, or long reach electric trimmers as they are sometimes known, will get their own, separate telescopic electric hedge trimmer section on this page, so if that’s what you’re interested in you can go straight there by clicking here.
We also have a separate page featuring reviews of pole hedge trimmers of all types (petrol, corded, and cordless) that you can read by following the link above.
Below you can find the contents section of this page so you can easily find the information you’re looking for. There is also a comparison chart for those of you who just want the specifications and aren’t really interested in reading a more in depth electric hedge trimmer review.

1. Bosch AHS 45-16 Electric Hedge Cutter
Specification: Warranty: yes, Power Source: Corded, Wattage: 420 w, Blade Length: 45 cm, Tooth Opening: 16 mm, Weight: 2.5 kg
This best-selling power tool from renowned makers Bosch is top of our chart.
Bosch motors are known for producing a good amount of power and this particular model is no different.
With the 420W motor driving the diamond ground blades, you’ll make light work of those unwanted twigs and branches and the 16mm tooth opening ensures that your cuts are neat and clean.
This Bosch electric hedge trimmer also handles well, thanks in no small part to the ergonomic design that allows you to get a solid grip on the tool in two places for better balance, and the fact that Bosch have tried their best to keep the overall weight down to 2.5 kilograms.
The 450mm blade length is good for cutting lower to medium sized hedges, but if you have tall hedges you should look at our best electric pole hedge trimmer reviews.
Overall build quality of the Bosch is good. The plastic casing feels solid and all the metal parts are high quality. Of course for only £64.99, you aren’t going to get the robustness of a top level Stihl electric hedge trimmer, but the Bosch AHS 45-16 is far from flimsy.
This Bosch electric hedge trimmer comes with a 2 year guarantee that is extendable to 3 years if you register with ‘My Bosch’. Also included in the price is a cover to protect the blade while it’s not in use so it has a brand behind it to match the customer sales of the Flymo Easicut 460 Hedge Trimmer.
My only gripe with this electric hedge trimmer is that the power cord isn’t very long (I’d say about 20 feet) so you have to use an extension lead to make it really practical.

With only a minor issue with the length of the power cord holding it back, the Bosch AHS 45-16 is indeed the electric hedge trimmer we recommend the most. It’s powerful motor and sharp blades deliver the cutting performance that you need to keep those hedges in tip top condition.
Coming in a very close second place behind the Bosch AHS 45-16 is our next best electric hedge trimmer review –
2. VonHaus 550W Electric Hedge Trimmer
Specification: Warranty: 2 Years, Power Source: Corded (10 m), Wattage: 550 w, Blade Length: 60 cm, Tooth Opening: 16 mm, Weight: 3.2 kg
Costing , this VonHaus electric hedge trimmer is a great bargain.
It features a very powerful 550 watt electric motor capable of producing 1700 oscillations per minute. When combined with the 600mm long cutting blade that has precision cut teeth, you can slice through branches up to 16mm in diameter with ease.
At 3.5kg the Von Haus electric hedge trimmer is heavier than the Bosch AHS 45-16, but it still qualifies to be called a lightweight machine and can be handled by pretty much anyone without a lot of hassle.
Again, the 10 metre power cord is a little on the short side but it is easily rectified with an extension lead.
Some nice safety features of the Von Haus are the hand protector shield that sits between the blade and the handle, and a two stage safety trigger to prevent accidental starts. There is also a place on the handle to wind and hold the power cord onto.
The Von Haus is a good product offering excellent value for money. The only reason that this is in second place on our list is because although this electric hedge trimmer feels solid enough, I always go with the more tried and tested brands, and Bosch tools are known for durability and good customer service.

Second only to the excellent Bosch AHS 45-16 Electric Hedge Cutter, and in some ways outdoing it, the Von Haus 550w electric hedge trimmer will make a happy customer out of pretty much anyone. Combining style, safety and a powerful motor, this is definitely a product to consider adding to your tool shed.
Our third place electric hedge trimmer review is of a popular Flymo product-
3. Flymo Easicut 460 Hedge Trimmer
Specification: Warranty: yes, Power Source: Corded (10 m), Wattage: 450 w, Blade Length: 45 cm, Tooth Opening: 19 mm, Weight: 3.74 kg
The main thing that this Flymo Easicut has over our other electric hedge trimmer reviews, is blade spacing. While the spacing on the Bosch AHS 45-16 and Von Haus 550W limits you to cutting branches up to 16mm in diameter, the Flymo Easicut allows you to tackle 19mm branches thanks to the wider tooth opening.
Power-wise, the Flymo’s 450W motor is more than enough to tackle most hedges, and the 45cm blade long blade has double action blade teeth to improve the quality of your cuts and leaving you with a neatly trimmed hedge.
Like the other products, this electric hedge trimmer has a hand guard and a dual starter switch as safety precautions. Unfortunately it also shares the same drawback- a short power cable. This power cable also feels a little flimsy and might get damaged or cut easily.
The Flymo has a nice sleek design and feels comfortable to hold and use. The soft grip handle on the rear of this small electric hedge trimmer gives you a nice grip, and the moulded front handle helps you to balance the tool’s 3.2kg weight.
The Flymo Easicut 460 Hedge Trimmer is a low cost, well performing electric hedge trimmer that overall is good value for money and is the cheapest electric hedge trimmer in UK with a brand as far as I am concerned.

With its sleek and cool looking design, this small electric hedge trimmer is definitely one of the more aesthetically pleasing out there.
Not only that, but it also delivers where it needs to and will have you slicing through branches with a smile on your face.
4. VonHaus Pole Hedge Trimmer
Specification: Warranty: 2 Years, Power Source: Corded (10 m), Wattage: 600 w, Blade Length: 45 cm, Tooth Opening: 20 mm, Weight: 5.1 kg
You buy a telescopic electric hedge trimmer because you need height. The von Haus certainly delivers in that aspect as when fully extended it reaches 2.7 metres, so unless you have freakily high hedges, this tool should see you ok.
This hedge trimmer is powered by a hefty 600 watt electric motor that produces a no load speed of 1500 rpm. When you combine this power with the 45cm precision cut blade whose teeth are spaced 20mm apart, you have an electric pole hedge trimmer whose performance you can be proud of.
To keep the tops of your hedges flat, and also to trim other hard to get to areas, the Von Haus pole hedge trimmer has an adjustable head, and you can select from 6 different positions allowing you to cut both vertically and horizontally.
At 5.2kg this trimmer is a little heavier than its closest competitors, but by adjusting the free shoulder strap and using the auxiliary handle, you can achieve a decent balance while you are cutting.
Like the Von Haus 550W non-telescopic hedge trimmer, this model has a guard behind the blade to protect your hands and a two stage safety trigger to avoid starting it accidentally.
When it comes to storage of the tool, Von Haus have got you covered. The telescopic pole is removable making it more compact and easy to find a place in your shed for it. There is a place to wind the cable onto and also a cover to protect the blade.

Packed with features and a powerful motor, the Von Haus pole hedge trimmer is a well thought out, and solidly put together garden power tool.
The large teeth spacing will allow you to cut through those thicker branches and get the job done quickly.
Another good extended electric hedge trimmer for around a hundred pounds is this product that is quickly gaining popularity…
5. Wolf Creek Electric Hedge Trimmer
Specification: Warranty: yes, Power Source: Corded (8 m), Wattage: 500 w, Blade Length: 46.6 cm, Tooth Opening: 28 mm, Weight: 3.7 kg
The Wolf Creek HT50 Electric hedge trimmer is a great little performer. Don’t be put off if you haven’t heard much from this brand because this product of theirs certainly does the job as good as top name brands such as Bosch, Black & Decker, and Makita.
This electric hedge trimmer has a 466mm long blade that is backed by a 500w motor and it can slice through branches 28mm in diameter, which is better than our top pick, the Von Haus Pole Hedge Trimmer, which has a maximum of 20mm.
The Wolf Creek HT50 is easy to set up and requires no tools to do so, meaning you can be up and trimming within minutes of receiving the product.
The telescopic pole is also very easy to operate and uses a simply latch to lock it into place. When fully extended the pole and blade together can reach 2.4 metres, so you won’t have any problems clipping even the tallest hedge tops.
The head of this electric hedge trimmer can articulate through a 150 degree tilt making reaching the hardest to get to areas a much simpler task.
When it comes to reduced weight, the Wolf Creek HT50 beats the Von Haus Pole Hedge Trimmer as it is much lighter at only 3.7kg. Unfortunately though most of that weight is in the motor and this makes this tool a bit top heavy, especially when fully extended, so I would recommend investing in a good harness to help with manoeuvrability.
To sum up, the Wolf Creek HT50 electric hedge trimmer is not without a minor fault or two, but for , it is one of the best performing tools of this type you can buy.

Finishing off our top 3 mains electric pole hedge trimmers is the Ryobi RPT4545M Pole Hedge Trimmer with Extension Pole
6. Ryobi RPT4545M Pole Hedge Trimmer
Specification: Warranty: 2 Years, Power Source: Corded, Wattage: 450 w, Blade Length: 45 cm, Tooth Opening: N/A, Weight: 4.1 kg
Ryobi are quickly making a name for themselves in the gardening world, and it’s thanks to products like this one and also their cordless pole hedge trimmer which we featured and reviewed in this article.
The Ryobi RPT4545M pole hedge trimmer’s main selling points are its reach of up to 4 metres, and the fact that the longest part of the pole can be removed so that you can use it comfortably on your lower hedges too.
It is slightly heavier than the Wolf Creek HT50 Hedge Trimmer at 4kg, but still lighter than the Von Haus Pole Hedge Trimmer. Like all of these types of products, it tends to be top heavy when using it at full reach and a good harness is recommended for safety reasons.
Talking of safety, the Ryobi RPT4545M has been designed with its safety switches closer together than most pole hedge trimmers, making it easier to use.
The cutting performance of this garden power tool is up there with our two other long reach hedge trimmers even though at 450w the motor is the smallest, and it makes light work of branches up to 18mm.
The build quality of the Ryobi is also very good and everything feels solid and durable and it should last a while.
The main problem I have with this model though is that the long pole is detachable but not telescopic. That means it’s great for cutting shorter hedges and very high ones, but if you have something in-between you might be better off with a telescopic electric hedge trimmer.

Good build quality is always a deciding factor for the best electric hedge trimmers, and Ryobi delivers in that respect.
